Newport is an interesting and picturesque market town with a population around 10,000.  It is located on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border in the centre of a rural farming area.  Situated 10 miles from the great new town of Telford it was itself planned as a new town of the 12th century, planted here during the reign of Henry I.  The wide main street designed for it's market and the narrow burgage plots running at right angles to it is typical of the Norman planned towns.  Due to the passage of time and a great fire of 1665 only a few of the medieval buildings remain, but there are many fine Regency and Georgian frontages.

Newport Parish Church was founded in the reign of Henry I, and affiliated to Edgmond Church which belonged to the Abbot of Shrewsbury.  It is dedicated to St Nicholas the patron Saint of fishermen.  It was restored in 1883 and 1890 to its present condition.

The town has a wide selection of welcoming places to stay, drink and eat.   Varied  types of accommodation offer the visitor a vast choice to meet their particular needs.  A wide variety of restaurants and cafes are available, from the Egon Ronay listed to excellent fast food outlets.  Town centre pubs and wine bars offer traditional warmth and variety, the rural atmosphere of England at its best, an unspoilt market town.
