1978

Thousands make it a night to remember.

Newport's Olde Tyme Market, held on Friday, proved successful once more, with the organisers claiming an attendance of several thousand visitors.

Mr Mike Foy, chairman of Newport Chamber of Commerce, said this week that St Mary's Street seemed very busy on Friday night and many of the organisations represented were very pleased with the takings on their stalls.

He could not estimate the size of the crowd during the evening, but chamber secretary Mr Pat Beech said on the night he felt there had been more people present than for the jubilee street market last year.

"The street was extremely busy and it seemed to stay busier longer," said Mr Foy.

He added that vigilance by members of the chamber and of Newport Parish Church seemed to have prevented any litter or damage in the churchyard during the market.

Winner of the Chamber of Commerce best-dressed stall competition was the Longford Playgroup stall.  The stallholders were presented with a cheque by Councillor Mrs Vera Jones, Newport's Town Mayor.

(Above is a reprint of an article which appeared in a local paper on Friday 16th June 1978 and below are some of the photographs which accompanied the above)
